Student teaching starts next week officially. I will be in a third grade classroom with OAAs (Ohio's Standardized Tests) right around the corner. I am anxious, scared, and excited all at the same time. This week in my student seminar class we have been discussing leadership. My question for today is: How do you LEAD your students in your classroom? How do you teach leadership? How do you MANAGE your classroom?

- My name is Tomi and I live with my wonderful husband and my two kids (my dogs!) in Ada, Ohio. I am currently doing student teaching and will be graduating in May 2012. I have decided to start a blog which I hope will follow me to my first teaching position. Being that I have little experience teaching, I have MANY questions so I might frequently ask the help of my followers!
I think it's Carson Dellosa again that has a book about character ideas. It has stories and worksheets, it's great. Having classroom jobs is a good way to teach leadership, even talking to them about their responsibility in that job. Teach them the types of students you are looking for to do certain jobs, and when they are in that position remind them often why they were chosen. Sometimes I have to switch a job if someone is not handling his/hers correctly. I talk to them to explain why I had to take it away, and what they can do to earn it back. Sometimes it helps to read books about great leaders and have the students discuss and write ideas as to how they can have some of those same characteristics. Just a couple of ideas, I'll add more when I think of some. :)

ReplyDeleteClassroom jobs are the best way to teach leadership and help the kiddos become more independent. With the jobs, we actually do less after they have been "trained"!
